The Upland Gate (Brama Wyżynna) is one of the most impressive historical entrances to the city of Gdańsk, in northern Poland. Built in the 16th century, it once marked the ceremonial start of the Royal Route, the path followed by Polish kings when they visited the city.
Designed in Dutch Mannerist style, the gate reflects the influence of Northern Renaissance architecture, with richly decorated stonework and the coats of arms of Poland, Gdańsk, and Royal Prussia displayed prominently on its façade. It was more than a point of entry — it was a statement of power, prestige, and urban pride.
The gate has served many functions over time: military checkpoint, customs station, and now, a monument reminding visitors of Gdańsk’s golden age as a Hanseatic city and a cultural crossroad between East and West.
In this activity, students will model the Upland Gate and explore how gateways shape the identity of a city — not only as physical barriers, but as symbols of welcome, security, and sovereignty.
