Sveta Nedelya Cathedral

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

The Sveta Nedelya Cathedral is a historic and symbolic church in the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria. Although its origins date back to medieval times, the current structure was built in the 19th century and later reconstructed after the 1925 bombing, one of the most tragic events in Bulgarian history.

Dedicated to Holy Sunday (Sveta Nedelya), the cathedral is a spiritual and architectural focal point of the city. Its green domes, arched colonnades, and serene interior create a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with the turbulent events it has witnessed.

The cathedral represents spiritual resilience and historical continuity. Despite destruction, political turmoil, and rebuilding, it has remained a place of prayer and reflection for generations of Bulgarians.

In this activity, students will model the Sveta Nedelya Cathedral and reflect on how religious buildings carry the weight of history, tragedy, and hope within their walls.
