Located in the heart of Zagreb, the Croatian Artists’ House (Dom hrvatskih likovnih umjetnika) is a striking example of modern architecture with a cultural mission. Built in 1938 in a circular, monumental style, the building is often referred to as the “Meštrović Pavilion”, named after the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, who designed it.
Originally conceived as a temple of art, the building’s function has changed with the tides of history — serving as a mosque, a museum, and even a political institution. Today, it is once again a hub for contemporary visual arts, hosting exhibitions, performances, and community events.
Its cylindrical form and minimalist facade make it stand out in the urban fabric of Zagreb, while its story reflects the resilience of culture and artistic expression in times of change.
In this activity, students will model the Croatian Artists’ House and explore how architecture can serve art — not only by housing it, but by becoming art itself.
