The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, located in the center of Sofia, is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world and one of Bulgaria’s most emblematic landmarks. Built between 1882 and 1912, it was constructed to honor the Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War, which led to Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule.
With its massive gilded dome, rich mosaics, marble interior, and towering bell tower, the cathedral is an architectural masterpiece of the Neo-Byzantine style. It can accommodate over 5,000 worshippers and stands as a national symbol of faith, independence, and gratitude.
Dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky, a medieval Russian prince and military leader, the cathedral reflects the deep historical and spiritual ties between Bulgaria and the Eastern Orthodox world.
In this activity, students will recreate the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and explore how sacred spaces can also be monuments of memory, national unity, and cultural identity.
