Tucked away in the historic heart of Bucharest, the Stavropoleos Church (Biserica Stavropoleos) is a small yet breathtaking example of Brâncovenesc architecture, a uniquely Romanian style that blends Byzantine, Ottoman, and Baroque influences. Built in 1724 by a Greek monk named Ioanikie Stratonikeas, the church originally belonged to a monastery complex.
Despite its modest size, the building is rich in ornamentation and atmosphere. Delicate stone carvings, wooden icons, and peaceful cloisters make it a spiritual and artistic jewel in the bustling capital. Inside, you'll find one of the most impressive collections of Byzantine music manuscripts and religious artifacts in the country.
The church has survived earthquakes, political upheaval, and urban development, remaining a serene refuge of beauty and devotion — a place where the sacred and the aesthetic meet.
In this activity, students will recreate the Stavropoleos Church and explore how religious architecture can serve as a bridge between cultures, eras, and artistic traditions.
