Perched on a hill above the Adriatic town of Piran, the St. George Parish Church (Župnijska cerkev sv. Jurija) is one of the most iconic religious buildings in Slovenia’s coastal region. Dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of Piran, the church offers stunning views of the sea and the surrounding red-roofed town.
Originally built in the 12th century and later renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century, the church’s design reflects the Venetian influence that shaped much of the Istrian coast. Its freestanding bell tower, modeled after St. Mark’s Campanile in Venice, further emphasizes this cultural connection.
Inside, the church features frescoes, a richly decorated altar, and artistic tributes to Saint George, often shown slaying the dragon — a symbol of protection and courage that resonates across Europe.
In this activity, students will recreate the Church of St. George and reflect on how architecture and geography come together to shape both religious and cultural identity.
