The Sarajevo Clock Tower, located in the heart of the old bazaar (Baščaršija), is one of the city’s most distinctive and historic landmarks. Built during the Ottoman period, this stone tower stands out not only for its architecture but for its unique function — it is one of the few lunar clock towers in the world.
Unlike standard clocks, it marks lunar time to indicate Islamic prayer times. Even today, the mechanism is manually adjusted by a local caretaker to match the lunar cycle, preserving a centuries-old tradition in the middle of a modern capital.
In this activity, students will model the tower and reflect on how timekeeping, religion, and cultural identity are intertwined in architectural heritage.
