The Temple of Saint Sava is not only the largest Orthodox church in Serbia, but also one of the largest in the world. Located in Belgrade, its massive white domes dominate the city skyline and symbolize national pride, faith, and cultural resilience.
Construction began in 1935, on the site where it’s believed the Ottoman Empire burned the remains of Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. However, due to war and political instability, the temple wasn’t completed until the 21st century, with its interior mosaics still being refined to this day.
Designed in the Byzantine Revival style, the temple features a central dome inspired by Hagia Sophia, richly decorated with mosaics, and capable of holding over 10,000 people. Its story is one of unfinished dreams, perseverance, and deep spiritual meaning.
In this activity, students will recreate the Temple of Saint Sava and explore how religious architecture becomes a symbol of national identity and endurance across generations.
