Radio Tower

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

The Bratislava Radio Tower, also known as the Slovak Radio Building, is one of the most unique and controversial architectural landmarks in Central Europe. Completed in 1983, its inverted pyramid shape defies gravity and expectations, making it a striking symbol of modernism and state ambition during the socialist era.

Designed by Slovak architects Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič, and Barnabáš Kissling, the building was envisioned as a bold experiment in form and function. Though initially met with criticism, it has since become an icon of architectural courage and a subject of global interest in brutalist design.

The tower houses Slovak Radio studios, and despite its futuristic appearance, it’s deeply tied to the country's cultural memory — a reminder of a time when architecture aimed to project ideology, progress, and national presence.

In this activity, students will recreate the Radio Tower and explore how modern architecture reflects not only function, but also political, cultural, and artistic movements in society.
