Nestled within the mouth of a cliffside cave, Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad) is one of the most dramatic and mysterious castles in Europe. Located in southwestern Slovenia, the current structure dates back to the 16th century, but the site has hosted fortifications as early as the 13th century.
Built directly into the karst rock face, the castle appears as if it has emerged from the mountain itself. It was designed for defensive advantage, with secret tunnels, natural protection, and the ability to withstand sieges — most famously during the time of Erazem Lueger, a knight-turned-legend who allegedly resisted imperial forces
Predjama Castle is a perfect blend of myth, nature, and medieval engineering. It shows how architecture can adapt to its surroundings while inspiring stories that live on through generations.
In this activity, students will recreate Predjama Castle and explore how history, geology, and legend can come together to shape unforgettable spaces.
