The Old Bridge of Mostar, or Stari Most, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most iconic landmarks. Originally built in the 16th century by the Ottomans, it gracefully arches over the Neretva River, linking the two sides of the historic city of Mostar.
More than a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, the bridge became a powerful symbol of unity in a multicultural city. During the Bosnian War, the bridge was destroyed — a tragic moment that shook the world. It was later rebuilt stone by stone, using original techniques, and reopened in 2004 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In this activity, students will recreate the bridge and explore how architecture can represent peace, resilience, and cultural identity.
