Name of Mary Cathedral

Located in the vibrant city of Novi Sad, the Name of Mary Cathedral (Crkva Imena Marijinog) is one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in Serbia. Built in 1895 in Neo-Gothic style, it stands out for its towering spire, stained glass windows, and detailed façade — a stark contrast to the Orthodox churches that dominate the region.

The church was designed by architect György Molnár and rises over 72 meters, making it the tallest building in Novi Sad. Its colorful roof tiles and rose windows give it a fairy-tale appearance, while its presence on the central square makes it a key part of the city’s social and cultural life.

This cathedral reflects the diversity of faiths and traditions in Vojvodina, where different communities have coexisted for centuries. It is a place where art, architecture, and spiritual identity intersect in a peaceful urban setting.

In this activity, students will recreate the Name of Mary Cathedral and explore how sacred architecture can express both unity and diversity in a multicultural society.
