The Gediminas Tower rises above Vilnius, standing proudly as a symbol of Lithuania’s independence, strength, and historical identity. It is the only remaining part of the Upper Castle, originally constructed in the 14th century by Grand Duke Gediminas — the legendary founder of the city.
This red-brick octagonal tower has witnessed battles, sieges, and rebirth, and has become a deeply emotional landmark for Lithuanians. From its hilltop position, it offers panoramic views of the capital, connecting the present-day city with its medieval roots.
After Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, the national flag was raised once again atop the tower — an act that turned this monument into a powerful emblem of freedom and resilience.
In this activity, students will model the Gediminas Tower and explore how a single structure can hold centuries of history, legend, and national pride within its walls.
