Clock Tower of Tirana

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

The Clock Tower of Tirana, or Kulla e Sahatit, is one of the city’s oldest and most beloved symbols. Located in the heart of Skanderbeg Square, it was originally built in 1822 by Haxhi Et'hem Bey, one of Tirana’s most important historical figures.

Standing 35 meters tall, the tower once offered the highest panoramic view of the city. Its bell, imported from Venice, rang through Tirana for decades, marking the rhythm of daily life. Over the years, the tower has undergone several restorations, including the addition of a German clock mechanism in the early 20th century, symbolizing the city’s transition toward modernity.

Today, it remains a powerful emblem of civic pride and urban heritage, connecting Tirana’s past with its vibrant present and serving as a bridge between its Ottoman past and its modern European identity.

In this activity, students will model the Clock Tower and explore how cities preserve their identity through public architecture that combines function, memory, and symbolism.
