Clock Tower of Kotor

Standing proudly in Kotor’s Old Town, the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula) has been a silent witness to centuries of life, trade, and transformation. Built in the early 17th century, it occupies a central spot in the town’s main square, surrounded by Venetian-style architecture, stone streets, and medieval charm.

The tower blends Gothic and Baroque elements, a reflection of the town’s dynamic history under various rulers, including the Venetians and Austro-Hungarians. Though not towering in size, its symbolic presence is powerful — serving not only as a timekeeper, but also as a public gathering point and symbol of civic order.

One of its most notable features is the stone pillory attached to its base, where wrongdoers were once publicly shamed. This detail adds a fascinating layer of social history to the monument, reminding us that heritage isn’t just about buildings — it’s about the stories they silently hold.
