Church of Saint Tryphon

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

The Church of Saint Tryphon, or Katedrala Svetog Tripuna, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the fortified town of Kotor, Montenegro. Built in 1166 on the remains of an earlier 9th-century church, it is dedicated to Saint Tryphon, the protector of the city and one of the most venerated saints in the region.

Its architecture is a remarkable example of Romanesque style on the Adriatic coast, featuring twin towers, a richly decorated façade, and a baroque interior that was added after several earthquakes reshaped the original structure. Despite these events, the cathedral has always been restored and preserved, making it a living symbol of faith and resilience.

The interior houses sacred relics, ancient stone reliefs, and fragments of frescoes that tell stories of devotion, maritime tradition, and civic pride. Listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor, this monument stands as a spiritual and cultural heart of the city.

In this activity, students will model the Church of Saint Tryphon, reflect on its layered history, and explore how sacred spaces evolve through time and disaster, while remaining anchors of community identity.
