Charles Bridge

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

Spanning the Vltava River in the heart of Prague, the Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is one of Europe’s most iconic and romantic architectural landmarks. Commissioned by King Charles IV in 1357, it replaced an older wooden structure and quickly became a vital connection between the Old Town and Prague Castle.

Built in Gothic style, the bridge features 16 arches and is lined with 30 statues of saints, many of which were added during the Baroque period. These figures transform the bridge into an open-air gallery — a place where art, religion, and daily life converge.

For centuries, it was the only way to cross the river, and it remains a living symbol of Prague’s historical, spiritual, and commercial heart. It has survived floods, wars, and modern crowds — still welcoming travelers as it did in medieval times.

In this activity, students will recreate the Charles Bridge and explore how infrastructure can become a cultural icon, shaped by history and storytelling.
